Courses are set up for $10 per hour, $50 for six hours (two 3 hour classes), and $60 for eight hours.

May 14, 2010, Friday: Affect Regulation: Without Drugs. Six hours of CEUs from GACA for $50. 9:30 a.m until 4:45. If you listen to most people who drink excessively or use drugs, they will state they use them because they give a pleasurable sensation. While that is mostly true, it misses the point that alcohol and drugs make a huge difference in the regulation of their affect or how they feel. Similarly, people do not eat excessively because they are hungry–the food is an affect regulator.

June 4, 2010, Friday. Recertification for CCS: seven hours toward the 20 required hours for anyone who HAS a CCS. $80. We will start at 9:30 a.m. We will use the new TIP # 52 on Clinical Supervision of the Substance Abuse Counselor. The course will be followed in the next year by a course on the supervision of the addiction counselor’s counseling. Then the next course in about a year will cover the supervision of the addiction counselor’s group counseling. Courses can be mixed with other hours you might take elsewhere to bring your total to 20 hours (not including the FORUM course).

June 11, 2010, Friday, 9:30 a.m until 4:45. $50 Process Group: Advanced Training: Do you do mostly education focused groups? Do your groups tend to be bull sessions? This training looks at how to facilitate a process group in which clients experientially receive what they need in order to make the changes that help them grow in relationships and recovery. We will follow Yalom’s model which is what Flores mostly described in his book on addiction and groups.

July 9, 2010, Friday, 9:30 a.m until 4:45. $50 Uppers, Downers, All-Arounders: Daryl Inaba’s book in Powerpoint. We will cover as much of Inaba’s fascinating book as possible. We will focus on his DVD presentation as well as trying to cover the material in the book. There is no better book out there on alcohol and other drugs and if you read it all last month, you will still find information you did not see when you read his book again.

Other anticipated courses include: counseling the individual addict/alcoholic, ethics, criminal justice and Motivational Interviewing. More information will be forthcoming.
